1. Flow-Through

Flow-through systems are easy to operate, low maintenance and eco-friendly solutions to manage water use for Splash Pads. These systems use potable water that goes through the play area. Effluent water is then returned to the municipal wastewater system. This is the easiest water management option and the one that requires the least amount of maintenance. A flow-through system uses, on average, 75-100 cubic metres of water per day. This is based on a 2” water service.

Benefits:

  • Easy to Operate
  • Low Maintenance
  • Eco-Friendly
  • Lowest initial capital investment compared to other water management systems
  • Lowest cost of electricity- minimal electrical draw
  • Lowest daily/weekly maintenance requirement
2. Repurpose

The second option is to capture the water that drains from the splash pad and repurpose it for surface irrigation, such as watering a nearby sports fields. The water will need to be disinfected prior to use. This system is simple to operate and requires minimal maintenance. Capture and repurpose systems use, on average, 50-75 cubic metres of water per day. The capacity of your holding tank will determine how much of the water can be repurposed and the overflow goes to storm or sanitary.

Benefits:

  • Simple to operate
  • Requires minimal maintenance
  • Reduced water consumption as splash pad water can be reused for irrigation
3. Recirculation

The final and most comprehensive option is to recirculate the water using advanced water treatment processes so that the water can be used again on the splash pad. Recirculation is closed-circuit system that filters and reuses the very same water flowing from your play area.  Though these systems do have a higher initial cost, long term they are more cost-effective water management system. This WQMS (Water Quality Management System) does require monitoring. Re-circulating systems use, on the high-end, 20-30 cubic metres of water per day.

Benefits:

  • Lowest water consumption compared to other water management systems
  • Utilizes treated water
  • Eco-friendly option that continuously recycles water supply
  • Best suited adjacent to an Aquatics Facility
